Evolution of a Champion

By Bill Tym

I do not totally subscribe to the theory that champions are born!

In my opinion, Bill Tilden showed profound insight and hit the nail on the head when he said, “it takes 5 years to make a player and 10 years to develop a champion.”

I believe that successful players go through a process of evolution, adaptation and change throughout their careers in order to reach their potential.

It has been my observation for over thirty years that many talented and determined players have failed to reach their potential because of the premature introduction of power and lack of variation (flexibility) in their games.

My primary goal when working with players is to lay a broad foundation by developing an “all court” game during the first 5 years. This includes all variations of stroke and spin, within the guidelines of proper technique.

I have tried to accomplish this by creating a progressive series of drills which facilitate the development of necessary skills that will allow each student to compete at the highest levels.

My goal is to create the highest level of proficiency in the fundamentals of technique and control of all shots from all areas of the court, before adding power.

What makes the drills challenging and effective is the intense focus and reinforcement of the critical habits of technique and control.
