Everyone loves an profound or inspirational quote, so let me begin with one of my favorites.
“People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.”
-Samuel Johnson, English Author & Critic (1709-1784)
That quote could probably be a blog post on its own, but I decided to use it here because one of the ways in which quotes can affect us is as a reminder. They can remind us of who we want to be or what we want to do. We may already know about a specific topic, but are we taking action in that area? A quote can inspire us to do so simply by reading it.
Quotes can also bring out a number of positive emotions in us. Joy, love, gratitude, inspiration, motivation, humor, etc. are great topics for exploring quotes. As athletes, we like to read things that spur us on to action or to new heights in our performances. This quote from Roger Staubach reminds us that very few people put in the extra work to achieve greatness.
“There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.”
-Roger Staubach, Former Quarterback – Dallas Cowboys (1969-1979), Football Hall of Fame
While some quotes are good reminders, there are others that can bring wisdom or open our minds to a new way of thinking. Philosophy quotes do this for me. I especially like quotes from Stoic philosophers like Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus. Other “philosophers” may be unconventional like baseball hall of fame member, Yogi Berra.
“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”
-Yogi Berra, Baseball Hall of Fame, (1925-2015)
I find the above quote to be useful in highlighting the need to have a plan in various parts of your life. That’s something that I still need to improve.
To get your day off to a good start, try reading an inspiring or profound quote each day. After reading the quote, think about how you can take action on the message or live up to its ideal. In the process, you’ll be activating more positive emotions, moving closer to being the person you want to be, and developing a personal philosophy that will help you navigate your life better.
There are several services that will send you a daily motivational quote. A Google search on “daily quotes email” will display lots of results. Try one of these services for a couple of weeks, and see what you think. At the very least, you will be feeding your brain with some nutritious information to help you have a great year.
What are some of your favorite quotes? Send me an email or leave them in the comments. I look forward to reading them.
